When it comes to moving, it can be one of life’s most challenging events. A recent survey said that 45 percent of Americans felt moving was the most stressful event in their lives. However, with some preplanning and some practical tips, moving day can go smoothly.
Allow Time for Preplanning
Moving is much more than placing boxes onto a truck. Most of the work goes into the six to eight weeks of planning before moving day. This time should be earmarked for researching the new location, calling utility companies, coordinating with the moving company, decluttering and donating items, and notifying loved ones of your move.
Let Go of Clutter
Letting go of items isn’t easy. Many things carry emotional value, whether it’s childhood furniture or a hand-crafted knick-knack. Many local places will take furniture, kitchenware, and clothes. Check out the local thrift shops like Society of St. Vincent de Paul Racine County or Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin and Metropolitan Chicago.
Level Up Packing Skills
Select the correct box when packing household items. For example, when you pack your heavy items into a large box, you won’t be able to lift them. Instead, pack your heavy items into small boxes. A small box with heavy items is more manageable than a large box with heavy items. Have new boxes on hand, usually sturdier than used boxes and strong enough to facilitate transporting your items.
Plan Your Route
Think logistics. How to get from point A to point B means more than jotting the address into your phone’s GPS. Look at the entire map and consider the safest route for a moving truck. You and your belongings arriving safely means more than arriving quickly.
If You’re Moving Yourself
While moving yourself without a company may seem cost-effective, there are often hidden costs and other roadblocks by doing the job yourself.
Most people that decide to move will enlist the help of friends and neighbors. However, these same people may not have the skills to efficiently pack boxes, handle fragile and sentimental items, or lift an appliance onto a truck without damaging it.
Heavy lifting is another task that should be specifically addressed. Keep in mind, professional movers are much better at it, and their risk of injury is significantly lower than yours. Think once again about your upcoming move and consider the pros and cons of hiring a moving company.
